Retired Hong Kong Woman Loses 6.6 Million Yuan in Cryptocurrency Scams
A 66-year-old retired woman in Hong Kong fell victim to a series of cryptocurrency scams, losing her entire life savings of 6.6 million yuan over six months. The scams involved three separate fraudsters posing as crypto experts, each promising lucrative returns or fund recovery.
The first contact came via WhatsApp in September 2025, where a supposed professional investor convinced her to transfer 1.4 million HKD for "guaranteed profits" before disappearing. Despite realizing the fraud, she sought help online—only to encounter two more scammers who extracted 600,000 yuan and 4.6 million yuan under similar pretenses.
Authorities warn that such recovery scams often target victims of prior frauds, exploiting desperation. No specific cryptocurrencies or exchanges were named in the incidents, underscoring the importance of due diligence in digital asset transactions.
